PSALM 78: A Stiff-Necked Cry

From Psalm 78

Perspective: The original reader of Psalms reading the unfaithful history of Israel and being humbled by their own heart

They drenched the altar

But they don't ever praise parched

They won't trust the Potter

Who only asks them for their hearts

They drag their feet to His gaze

But all He hears is them complain

What wretched ones He chose

A valley of dry bones

But

The more they choose their idols

The more I recognize

That it's me upon the page

I have Israel's heart inside

I utter a stiff-necked cry

As I too sit in exile

Saying, "I don't want to be yours"

"I don't want to be yours"

Apparently they were never free

Even after He split the sea

They walked free out of Egypt

But still enslaved themselves to sin

They mirror my own pride

It pounces like a crouching lion

Somehow I'm loved all the same

Though I am Abel and I am Cain

Yet

The more holy I try to be

The more holes appear in me

How is He in love with me?

Rushing waters flow over me

And they also speak gently

Saying "Gentile you are clean"

I just want to be yours

I just want to be yours
