EZRA-NEHEMIAH: Rebuilding Walls, Rebuilding Hearts

From the books of Ezra and Nehemiah.

Perspective: the exiles getting tugged back and forth between hope and disappointment through 3 events: returning to Jerusalem, experiencing its ruins, and the process of physical and spiritual restoration.

The return.

There’s a stirring of the divine

What I’ve been promised, is it time?

Inhale, exhale resuscitated breaths

There’s movement again in my chest

A righteous one leads the charge

Identity’s unearthed after being charred

Hope used to be the dashing of a dream

Now it’s something I’m beholding

Jerusalem.

Feet coated in gray ash

Stumbling over burned rubble

This great, glorious return

Is only promises unconfirmed

Lungs blackened by the soot

Is this where the glory stood?

Returned but tempted to turn

At least there I had a home unburned

The rebuilding.

Callouses cover my tired hands

But hope of walls and hearts stand

Years of ruins built up re-defined

Its tearing down the walls of mine

Joy unbreakable adorns the walls

Echoes preceded by renewed love

I returned but found I had to return to Him

But why am I crippled by disappointment?
