From the book of Jeremiah
Perspective: God speaking to the prophet Jeremiah about the spiritually depraved state of Judah
Jeremiah,
This purpose predated your first breath
Carry my word like fire in your chest
I refute inadequacy because success is mine
Dress yourself for work, it is time
My bride has fallen but not in love
She refuses to see what she has done
I have to wrestle conflicting love with hate
But love for her prevails for my own sake
Complacency thrust out all her humility
How was it that I struck her but she felt nothing?
Gorging herself like a fattened calf
How does she not see the slaughter ahead?
The delight of her eyes is merely wooden
But the True craftsman wasn't made by invention
The everlasting God, his voice roars like the sea
But her blocks of wood can't even ask to be carried
What right has my beloved in my house?
Wasn't it sacred, that covenant we vowed?
She shattered it so fast she remained dizzy
As if she wanted an annulment from the beginning
She proudly spoiled her glory by her filth
Brides are deserted, so don't take one yourself
Her turmoil ahead steals any joy to marry
For the dead bodies will stack tall unburied
Addicted to wandering in pursuit of the wind
Incapable of restraining her feet from sin
The Potter's hands rework the marred vessel
But too hardened, its pieces are thrown to gravel
Prophecy means nothing to her anymore
Except to condone her desire to whore
How does she not hear my cries of warning?
Lies have dismantled any ability to hear me
Her kings only sit themselves on thrones of dust
But I have reserved David's for one who is just
Finally a man that deserves the title king
When my bride returns he'll teach her humility
For now only laments are strolling her streets
As my bride is brought down to her knees
Her towering walls are scorched to the dirt
Judah, are you pummeled yet by my words?
Her fingers break clutching what she expected to see
But her lies couldn't override my sovereignty
I made her drink the golden cup till she got drunk
Except it is her that is being swallowed up
Just as she was plucked up from her land
She will be planted anew by my tender hand
The ruined holy stones of Jerusalem's glory
I will refashion within her heart permanently
Her exhausted bones the enemy gnawed
Will be wrapped in skin and absent of flaw
I am vowing a new covenant with my bride
I made no room for lamentation this time
